After the congress ends on Wednesday afternoon, our congress president Lucija Perharič and Zvonka Zupanič-Slavec, Professor of History of Medicine, will take you on a tour to Idrija, a Slovenian toxicological gem and present the history of Idrija and the impact of its residents on medicine, toxicology, and other natural sciences.
This small town is located 60 km west of Ljubljana and became famous for the discovery of mercury in 1493. The mineral Idrialin, which was discovered here, is named after the place where it was found. For 500 years, until its closure in 1994, the Idrija mercury mine was the second largest in the world. In its golden age, the plant covered 13 percent of the world market. Part of the old mine can still be visited today. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Historic Mercury Extraction Sites: Almadén and Idrija.”
